# Antarctica

**Status:** Continent governed under the Antarctic Treaty System (no sovereign UN member “country”).
**ISO code (conventional):** AQ / ATA
**Capital:** None (research stations only)
**Sources:** CIA World Factbook; Secretariat of the Antarctic Treaty; British Antarctic Survey / national programs (see Works Cited).

## Snapshot

Antarctica is Earth’s southernmost continent, almost entirely covered by ice. It has no permanent indigenous population and no capital city. Human presence consists of rotating scientific and support personnel at research stations operated by many nations.

The continent is managed under the **Antarctic Treaty** (signed 1959; entered into force 1961) and related agreements that set aside territorial disputes for peaceful scientific use, ban military bases of a warlike character, and (via the Protocol on Environmental Protection) designate Antarctica as a natural reserve devoted to peace and science.

## Geography

- Centered on the South Pole; surrounded by the Southern Ocean.
- Ice sheets hold the vast majority of Earth’s freshwater ice; ice shelves fringe much of the coast.
- Extremely cold, dry interior; coastal and peninsula climates are milder relative to the plateau but still polar.
- Unique wildlife in surrounding seas and ice edges (penguins, seals, seabirds, krill-based food webs).

## People and activity

- Seasonal and year-round research stations (e.g., McMurdo, Amundsen–Scott, Concordia, and many others).
- Activities: climate and ice-sheet science, astronomy, biology, geology, logistics, and limited regulated tourism in some coastal areas under Treaty rules and national laws.

## Governance

No single national government rules Antarctica. Claimant and non-claimant states participate in Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meetings. Mineral resource exploitation is prohibited under the Madrid Protocol’s mining ban (subject to the Protocol’s review provisions). Environmental impact assessment and protected areas are core tools of management.

## Why it appears without UN country statistics

Antarctica is not a UN member state and is not in Ernest Atlas’s country economic CSV. It is shown on the basemap so learners can select the continent and read this profile instead of an empty panel.
